Public Works Supervisor
Position Summary: Under the supervision of the City Administrator, the City Public Works Supervisor performs semi-skilled and skilled work in Water, Sewer, Streets, Storm Water, Cemetery and Parks within Public Works.
The Public Works Supervisor is an exempt position under FLSA. Supervising and management of the department including maintenance of City-owned properties, and leading special projects are the primary responsibilities of this position. This employee should possess excellent supervisory, managerial, organizational, communication, and public relations skills.
This hands-on supervisory position is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the City’s parks, streets, right of ways, water, sewer, stormwater, and park infrastructure.
Position Experience: Three to five years of supervisory experience is necessary. One to three years of public works experience is preferred.
Education: a high school diploma or GED is required. A Technical degree or higher in a related field is preferred. The ability to obtain water and wastewater Certification is required.
A valid Kansas Driver’s License is required, CDL is preferred.
Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of local ordinances, codes and working knowledge of mathematics is required. This employee must be able to efficiently operate heavy equipment, computers, and necessary software, office equipment, and other equipment. The ability to interpret maps, data, manuals, legal documents, reports, written instructions, to concentrate on tasks in the presence of distractions, to understand and anticipate problems is required. The ability to work in a team setting is also required.
Problem Solving: Frequent independent problem solving is a requirement for the position. This employee makes daily decisions about prioritizing assignments, resolving personnel issues, citizen complaints, preparing daily work schedules, and assists in the departmental budget process.
Working Conditions: while performing essential functions of this position, the employee will encounter outdoor adverse weather and working conditions including but not limited to temperature extremes, rain, snow, ice, and confined space. The employee may regularly be exposed to but not limited to bloodborne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery, and fumes. Hearing protection is occasionally required.
Physical Requirements: Must be in good physical condition and have the ability to climb, crawl, and lift to effectively respond to calls of a Public Works Supervisor. Must be able to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.
